I’ve you’re searching for an email automation tool, these are two names you’ve probably seen recommended. Today, we’re going to compare the two platforms to help you decide which one is the best for your needs.
They offer somewhat of a different approach to the task, so we’re going to examine their features, similarities and difference—as well as pricing, of course—to help you make a decision.
Kartra is an “all-in-one” tool that bundles several different features oriented towards launching and promoting products in general, but it works better with digital products. As such, its features go from marketing back to even helping you create said products.

On the other hand, MailChimp is a marketing too focused solely around email marketing and automating tasks like building lists and sending emails. You can also create newsletters and manage your mailing lists.
It was created back in 2001, and it’s currently one of the largest email automation services available on the internet.
Its interface is also very intuitive, and it’s tailored to bring its automation features to people with little knowledge on the matter. It now has over 17 million users, and it even offers a fee plan for newcomers.
Features in Kartra
Kartra lets you build membership areas for your website or even restricted areas for online courses.
It works with a drag-and-drop editor, so you don’t need to touch a line of code. You can set up everything in minutes and have your content ready to reach your audience. You can also brand the membership website with your own as well as divide it into different membership tiers.
Finally, you can incorporate a help desk into this section for members to reach out via live chat and support tickets.
Kartra also supports a solid campaign and funnel features. You can either create yours from zero or import one of the premade campaigns and simply customize them to fit your brand and launch them.
You have funnels for building lists, squeeze pages, applications, book launches, and more. Besides, you can share your own campaigns for others to buy on Kartra’s marketplace or buy other people’s funnels.
As mentioned, you don’t have to build anything on your own if you’re using Kartra. You have templates for virtually any landing pages you might ever need.
Not only do you have the traditional pages like squeeze and webinar pages, but you also get templates for blogs, upsells, and even 404 instances. The legal section templates are particularly helpful when starting out.
You can also implement fields with features like tagging or automation to the premade templates. Finally, Kartra comes with its own cart and checkout sections, so you don’t have to import any apps or program one yourself. You can process payments from PayPal and other processors.
Kartra lets you personalize your email marketing approach and automation to fit every visitors’ behavior on your website.
It’s not limited to email either, as SMS marketing is also available. You can create live campaigns to engage with all subscribers on your list, and it all works with a workflow system that feels natural.
You can set up triggers for tags, abandoned carts, page visits, clicks on certain videos and URLs, membership level, and more.
As we mentioned, you can also host your videos directly on Kartra instead of YouTube or Vimeo with the self-explanatory Kartra Video.
It even comes with its own customizable video player for you to present your videos. Among the other features, we also have viewer tags, CTAs, and even adding opt-in forms during certain points in the video.
One of my favorite features in Kartra is the calendar app. It lets your customer schedules all appointments with you by themselves, so it’s perfect for consultants or coaches.
The app shows when you’re available, and it has great features like reminders, so you don’t have to worry about missing appointments. It also integrates with the rest of your business.
The platform offers great customer support for newcomers, and the help desk is ready to provide any assistance necessary.
You can contact them through live chat, tickets, and even call them on Skype and phone. Similarly, you can also set up your own help desks for your products as well as a database with helpful resources for your customers.
You can also create affiliate programs for your own business. That way, affiliates can take care of marketing your products for you.
You can assign links and manage your affiliates automatically. There’s even a marketplace available for you to either post your affiliate offers or become an affiliate yourself for other products in the platform.
Features in MailChimp
You can create sign-up forms for people to subscribe to your lists. Once built, you receive a code to embed on your website.
It supports field customization and even integration with pop-ups for more versatility. The only issue I have with MailChimp is that the builder is a bit clunky, and it can take some time to get used to.
MailChimp lets you group your subscribers in different lists. You can segment your email lists based on their different factors like email clients and interaction with your own emails, so it’s pretty flexible.
MailChimp integrates with lots of third-party apps for greater functionality. The list of integration spans about 800 different tools, so you have a lot of potential features to play around with.Furthermore, MailChimp integrates with platforms like Zapier, so you’re not “limited” to the range offered. You can even use apps which no longer support direct integrations.
Intuitive email editor
Similar to Kartra, MailChimp also has a drag-and-drop editor for your emails. You can use it to place all the elements to where you need them; these include text, images, videos, and buttons.
Besides dragging them, you can also change their format to suit your brand until you have the emails you need.
MailChimp also offers sophisticated templates for your emails. There’s an entire library of templates just waiting in case you don’t have any idea where to start, and they look quite professional as is.
You just need to pick the one that best fits your stile and start editing until it suits your brand. You can change their fonts, borders, colors, and all the styling elements you need.
You can also see reports for every campaign you run on the platform. As for the stats, you get everything you need to know, and even if you find something is missing, you can simply integrate it with Google Analytics. Doing so lets you track conversions, customers, and social media performance.
Automating your email marketing is very simple with MailChimp, and you can choose from a bit over a dozen workflows. Unfortunately, you can’t create them from scratch, so you’re kind of stuck with what they offer.
They do cover the basics. You can send followups based on certain rules and triggers. The welcoming automation is a great example; it lets you choose between sending a welcoming message or an onboarding or education series to your new subscribers.
Sadly, that’s pretty much how far it goes. For an email marketing platform, it’s a bit too simple.
Customer support is another weak point for MailChimp. The only channel available is live chat, but that’s only available for users who upgrade their accounts. Other than that, you have a resource base with varied information on the most common questions and issues you might come across while using MailChimp.
How are they similar?
Both platforms offer similar drag-and-drop builders to allow even complete newbies to create professional-looking designs, It saves a lot of time learning and writing code, and the results are just as good.
Kartra and MailChimp lets you capture leads with sign-up forms. It enables aspiring customers to subscribe to your list quickly and comfortably.
The forms themselves have quite a bit of customization features in both MailChimp and Kartra. You can add and remove fields as you see fit as well as integrate them to your website.
As the name suggests, MailChimp is an email marketing app with lots of features to make your approach more efficient. You have plenty of customization options for your campaigns and decent automation functionality.
Kartra also offers email marketing features as part of their suite of marketing features. While some people might prefer a specialized platform, I’ve found Kartra’s automation functionality a lot stronger than MailChimp, and you can personalize your messages for every visitor based on their behavior.
Both platforms provide support for newcomers to make their introduction a lot swifter. However, while they both offer resource databases, Kartra offers a bit more flexibility than MailChimp.
Kartra offers a similar knowledge base to MailChimp and live chat, but it also lets you contact them via tickets and calls.
MailChimp, on the other hand, only has live chat and the database available for its users. The database is quite extensive, luckily, and while the live chat is available only for upgraded users, at least the free plan is an advantage over Kartra.
How are they different?
The calendar app in Kartra lets your customers schedule appointments with you by themselves, always based on your own availability. This feature isn’t available in MailChimp since it’s only about email marketing.
Again MailChimp dismisses anything not related to email marketing, so sales funnels aren’t available in the platform. You can send personalized and automated email sequences to your lists, but you can’t create funnels for launching products.
Kartra has 5 pricing plans, billed monthly: starter ($99), silver ($199), gold ($299), platinum ($499) and diamond ($699). If you choose to pay for the whole year, you can get about 25% discounted from the full price.
All of the features are available from the starter plan, so you should only upgrade your subscription if you need more leads, emails, bandwidth, or membership sites. Unlimited membership sites are granted from the second tier (silver), as well.

MailChimp offers 4 pricing plans, also billed monthly: free, essentials ($9.99), standard ($14.99) and premium ($299).
The free subscription is for individuals and newcomers who don’t really need many features. The other subscriptions work based on how many subscribers you need in your account.
You can either pay for a plan with a set amount of subscribers or buy credits to pay for every email you send. You also receive discounts per email depending on how many credits you buy at once.
The premium option is basically an enterprise plan. Besides higher capacity, it also has more advanced features like support priority, advanced analytics, and improved features from previous plans.
MailChimp is a nice way to start out your own email marketing efforts if you’re new. The free plan is more than enough to get your feet wet, and the first 2 plans are cheaper than Kartra.
However, Kartra does offer more automation features than MailChimp for less than the premium subscription. Therefore, it might be worth your time upgrading down the line.
If you want to promote digital products, create membership sites or online courses, then Kartra is the way to go straight away.
