Right off the bat, Kartra is a marketing platform for hosting and promoting products, and Shopify is a platform for building eCommerce sites. If you’re familiar with the industry, you could compare Kartra with ClickFunnels and Shopify with WordPress/WooCommerce.
Both platforms let you build and house your online business, so it’s not uncommon to feel divided when choosing between the two. Sure, they both have different approaches and are all-around different platforms, but spotting these differences might be difficult for people unfamiliar with either of them.
They’re two of the most popular online solutions for entrepreneurs today; they’re excellent at what they do: making your life easier. Some people even use both at the same time, but we’re here to help you decide on which one is better for your needs.

Kartra was created by Genesis Digital founders: Andy Jenkins and Mike Filsaime. They’re both popular marketers with a few other well-received products like EverWebinar. You might have seen it promoted by Frank Kern as well.
Among the main features in Kartra, we have a strong focus on marketing through email and sales funnels—as well as automation features for both. Interestingly, you can also use it to host online courses and membership areas.
The tool has plenty of training available around the internet, and it even offers the Kartranault training program to help you use all of its features.
Shopify is an eCommerce platform, and it’s used to build online websites. Today, it’s almost synonyms with the industry. This is because it’s one of the most popular eCommerce solutions today, competing with giants like WooCommerce.
Unlike Kartra, it focuses on building fully-functional websites to showcase your products and manage sales. For this, it comes with many themes with different styles to streamline the store design process; it eliminates the need to code your website into existence.
While it doesn’t have any marketing features built into it other than the blog section, it does offer all of the tools necessary to build your eCommerce. It boasts a huge community of developers to help you with any issues and even add more features to your site via third-party integrations.
It’s similar to Kartra in that it offers its own hosting. There’s no need to go around hiring a hosting service for your store. It follows along the same principle of giving you all the tools you need to create and run your store.
Main features in Kartra
Kartra lets you create your own help desk section for customer support. It’s fully integrated into Kartra, and you can create several help desks for your products. It’s a great feature since other platforms usually require you to integrate a separate app for it.
You can offer live chat, support tickets, and even calls via Skype for your customers. There’s also the option to create a resource database (think of a wiki) for your customers.
Funnels and campaigns
As we mentioned, Kartra lets you build different types of funnels for your own marketing efforts. It lets you build them from the ground up, but it’s also highly intuitive for beginners.
If you know little about funnel design, you get access to full funnel sets. These are categorized depending on your goals, and they’re great to get you started for the first time.
The automation features in Kartra are one of my favorite features in the platform, and it comes with one of the most intuitive builders available. You can set triggers and conditions to ensure your messages are automatically sent to the right audience.
The communication menu also lets you load and manage mailing lists as well as each lead individually. The same goes for your campaigns and email marketing in general.
This is a simple but effective app. It shows a calendar based on your availability; your customers can use this section to schedule their own appointments with you.
It’s great for consultations and coaching. It has a reminder system in place so that you don’t miss anything as well.
Besides online courses, you can build entire membership portals on Kartra. It’s particularly useful if you want to restrict content for special subscription tiers.
Speaking of content, you can configure how you want that content to be accessed. You can have it ready from the get-go or have your students unlock more as they progress.
Finally, you can brand these sections with your logos and style.
If you know nothing about design, Kartra also has your back. It comes with a plethora of design templates for every type of page you want to create.
You have access to optimized templates for squeeze and sales pages, forms, carts and checkouts, etc. You only need to import one, customize it to fit your brand, and publish it.
As you become better at creating pages, you can even submit your designs as templates through the marketplace for others to buy.
This feature is almost taken for granted, but it sets Kartra apart from many other funnel builders and general marketing tools. You’ll usually have to host your videos on platforms like YouTube or Vimeo, but Kartra lets you host your videos directly on your account.
It works great on mobile as well, and it stays in-line with Kartra’s marketing focus. You can show messages and CTAs while your video plays to give a nice boost to your conversion rates.
Yes, we kind of mentioned it already, but the main attraction in Kartra’s marketplace is a lot bigger.
You can post your products on this space and have affiliate marketers sign-up for your products and promote them. You can also become an affiliate marketer for other people’s products.
Main features in Shopify
Lots of themes
One of the main advantages in Shopify is the huge amount of themes available to everyone. You can think of them as templates, and they greatly streamline the entire creation process.
Most templates are optimized for different devices, and they work perfectly in both desktop and mobile devices. You can use them just like Kartra’s templates: you import one and customize its layout and elements to suit your needs.
It even offers a drag-and-drop editor to make things even easier.
My only problem with these templates is how the free ones are rarely optimized, and you usually need to buy a premium one if you want a good store setup.
Shopify is a lot more varied when it comes to accepting payments. After all, its focus is to offer all the tools you need for your store.
You have over 100 different gateways available to integrate with your store, so you can sell to a huge audience.
The blogging features in Shopify let you implement a solid content marketing approach to drive organic traffic into your store. The built-in tool lets you create content and apply solid SEO techniques to help it rank higher.
It’s not as fleshed-out as dedicated services like WordPress, but it offers enough formatting and SEO functionality to keep you from needing a separate platform.
Shopify’s reporting features come packed with information, and it’s all you need to assess your store’s performance and what to do next.
You can study where your customers come from, how many return and how much they spend. The financial reports let you evaluate your income, costs, profits, taxes, etc. It even comes with a decent marketing analytics feature and abandoned cart information.
Just keep in mind that these are available for advanced Shopify users. Lower-tier subscribers still get a dashboard with stats, but these are superficial, so you’ll need to get a separate tool.
Shopify has a couple of apps for mobile users who want to manage their business from their smartphone.
The main Shopify app is where you manage your orders. You can view them and fulfill them as well as accessing your reports and editing your products.
The other app is Point of Sale. This is an interesting one since it lets you take payments personally via card, and you can both track your inventory and send customers their receipts.
This is another huge feature in Shopify, and it lets you take your store’s capabilities beyond what the standard Shopify features offer. You can find countless apps to integrate into your store.
These can be either free or paid, and they add more functionality to your store like countdown timers for scarcity, abandoned cart recovery, and more. You can also use them to add accounting logs and landing pages.
Some premium themes also come with their own in-built apps to save you money.
Finally, Shopify is the main platform for people looking to dropship. The marketplace comes with several dropshipping-oriented apps to help you source products and fulfill orders automatically with your suppliers.
Besides, Shopify has partnerships with the largest shipping services like DHL and UPS, so you can offer great shipping rates.
How are they different?
What Kartra does better
Being a marketing platform as well, Kartra offers better features to study and attract your audience. You have affiliate programs, sales funnels, and email marketing integrated into the core features.
Besides, you can build affiliate programs without external apps. It also offers the calendar, help desk, and membership site functionalities right off the bat.
Kartra is best for marketing and promoting your products.
What Shopify does better
On the other hand, Shopify is the clear winner when it comes to creating an entire online store. You get countless themes and features focused solely on building a functional store to list and sell your products.
You can offer gift cards, build a dropshipping store, blog, and offer a huge range of payment options for your customers.
Therefore, Shopify is the clear winner if you want to build an entire online store.
Kartra offers 5 different plans: from starter to diamond. They start at $99 monthly and go all the way up to $699, with a discount around 25% if you pay for the full year. There’s also a $1 plan.
However, all features from Kartra are available right from the starter plan. While starters are limited to 2 membership websites, the next tier—silver for $199 monthly—removes this cap, and you only need to keep upgrading if you need more leads, emails or bandwidth.
Shopify offers 3 different plans: Basic, standard, and advanced for $29, $79 and $299 monthly, respectively. You can save 10% if you pay for the full year and 20% if you pay for two.
While the different tiers mostly offer the same basic features—i.e. Unlimited products, support, SSL certificates, etc—you do have limits when it comes to specific features. An example is the advanced analytics you get only on the top-tier plan.
Both platforms are excellent solutions depending on what you need, but they don’t necessarily replace each other.
If you want to run a full store with product catalogs, several payment options, and an intuitive builder, then Shopify is the way to go. Kartra is a lot better for promoting digital products like online courses and membership sites—mostly centered around mentorship, education, and consulting.
However, as we also mentioned, you can integrate the two platforms if you desire, so that’s another possibility to consider.
